The government's handling of the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) has been criticised by the House of Lords. Concerns have been raised by the Lords' economic affairs committee about the management of the scheme, which is split between the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. Furthermore, they noted that there appear to be a shortage of places for those who apply to the scheme, citing figures showing that in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, out of 17,000 registered applicants in a year, only 6,000 apprenticeships were allocated in the region, according to trainingzone.co.uk. In response to the report, Martin Freedman, head of pay, conditions and pensions at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, called for 'a more coherent framework of post 14 qualifications which incorporates apprenticeships'. He also echoed the Lords' concerns about the splitting of the Department of Education into two. This week, president of the National Union of Students, Wes Streeting, warned the innovation, universities, science and skills select committee that people are discouraged from entering apprenticeship schemes due to their minimum wage exemption, reported the Guardian. ... |
