| Motorola (NYSE: MOT) planned again to try and show the FCC that a device can operate on unlicensed TV spectrum, called the "white spaces" without causing interference. They planned to present an updated version of a wireless device on Wednesday to prove it, Dow Jones reported. Before this, the FCC has examined several devices from Motorola and companies such as Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG). In the new device, Motorola said it included sensors designed to detect "nomadic" wireless microphones to avoid interfering with "roving, unplanned news-gathering operations." The companies involved belong to the White Space Coalition. Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel and T-Mobile contend the spectrum could be used for backhaul, while Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and other members want the spectrum to be unlicensed and used for wireless broadband, similar to how Wi-Fi works today. Google is pushing the FCC to approve the devices this year, so that white-space devices could be available as soon as late 2009. ... |
