Michael Mann is a prolific director whose style informs his narratives as much as characters or environment. And in my story about his work at least one scholar describes him as being the equal of Martin Scorsese. Certainly the two artists share a fascination with the lives of men often lived outside the mainstream. Mann is currently filming "Public Enemies" with Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, in Wisconsin, thanks to tax credits that went into effect Jan. 1.
