Another news from Australia, scientists from the continent found that mercury poisoning could be a contributing factor for why dolphins strand themselves on the shore. According to an article from the Royal Society of Chemistry , scientists from the Monash University in Melbourne found higher mercury levels in beached dophins, twice that of live animals. Historical mining could be the source of heavy metals in the water, the scientists said. They plan to test mercury levels in the teeth of museum specimens, which include dolphins from the late 19th century to the very recent, to see how mercury accumulation has changed over time. ... |
