| United States Republican presidential candidate John McCain has met with President Alvaro Uribe while on a 24-hour visit to Columbia. Mr McCain praised the Columbian president for his efforts to thwart the FARC rebel movement and curb cocaine production. The US presidential candidate used the occasion to urge the US Congress to pass a free-trade deal between the two nations. The Democrat-led Congress has obstructed the trade pact, arguing it will lead to the loss of US jobs. Mr McCain's next stop on a tour that is seen as a way of scoring political points against Democrat rival Barack Obama, is Mexico. By profiling himself as an experienced politician in foreign affairs, Mr McCain's campaigners hope to boost his image among Hispanics, most of whom support the Democrats.
