The Mavs obviously should have taken my draft advice last year. But, nooooooo .... they took Nick Fazekas when Glen "Big Baby" Davis somehow fell into their laps . The Mavs cut Fazekas, who spent most of his time as a Mav in the D-League, instead of 96-year-old Juwan Howard when they needed to make room on the roster to sign and trade Keith Van Horn. Big Baby spent the whole season in the NBA and was one of the unsung heroes on the Celtics' title team (9.6 points, 12.6 rebounds per 48 minutes in the Finals). Mark Cuban clearly ought to make me a paid draft consultant, but I'm willing to offer the Mavs my advice for free. One problem: I really don't have much of a clue about the foreign dudes the Mavs might draft at No. 51. I'll spend the next few days studying like a college student cramming for a final, because I don't want to let the Mavs down. Of course, there is a better-than-average chance that the Mavs will either buy a late first-round pick or move up in the second round. Maybe both. But don't assume that it's impossible to get a significant piece in the 50s. Just look south to San Antonio, which snagged Manu Ginobili with the 57th overall pick. If you've got hot draft opinions, now is the time to speak up. If you want to badmouth Big Baby, keep your yap shut!!!! ... |
