Ryan Greenblatt has always enjoyed a good challenge. So when a friend of the 27-year-old Marshfield native suggested he try competing in triathlons, Greenblatt was up to the task. For the last two years he’s spent his entire summer competing in triathlon events but this past July, Greenblatt took on the toughest triathlon race there is: The Ironman. On July 20, Greenblatt traveled to Lake Placid for the Ironman USA Triathlon, which featured a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run. His goal was to finish within 12 hours. Greenblatt crossed the line in 11:43:21. “It was a really great experience,” Greenblatt said of his first Ironman, noting that the winner finished in just under 10 hours. “There’s a lot of planning involved with regards to how to effectively do the race. I’m constantly aware of my condition during each phase of the triathlon.” Of course, this type of mental toughness doesn’t come without some serious training. Greenblatt says he starts training roughly seven months before his first triathlon event. He works out 18 to 24 hours a week, six to seven hours a day. Though his sessions vary, some of his most effective are what he calls “Brick Workouts,” training in two of the three events at a time. “I like to do two disciplines per day, one hour each,” he said. “Some days I’ll do a swim/bike, the next I’ll do a bike/run.
