Full coverage of UK politics This is going to be the most unpopular blog I’ve ever written, but here goes. MPs should set their own salaries. They should be free – encouraged, even – to take on additional jobs. And the fuss about how much they can spend on their kitchens is silly and demeaning. MPs might well serve us better if they had other jobs too Let me try to justify those three assertions in turn. First, while it may seem incongruous for MPs to be able to vote themselves pay rises, they are in a special position. Parliament is supposed to be supreme. Indeed, the readiness with which MPs have handed away their sovereignty to quangoes, judges and Eurocrats is the chief political problem of our age. If they are too nervous to sit in judgment on themselves, it is hardly surprising that they won’t take responsibility for the affairs of the nation. To put it another way, there is a direct connection between MPs contracting out responsibility for their pay and conditions and MPs contracting out the administration of Britain , as they did when they voted through the European Constitution Lisbon Treaty.
