On Thursday morning, a crowd of Methodist Medical Center staff and community leaders gathered to celebrate the launch of the hospital's new on-site helipad. The FAA-approved helipad is equipped to handle air ambulance traffic from across the region. "Methodist serves a wide geographic population, and the helipad will allow transport of emergency patients from rural hospitals and remote areas," an MMC press release stated. The addition of new services at Methodist such as interventional radiology and interventional cardiology, along with a new rapid access transfer process made the campus helipad a reality, say hospital officials. "Methodist anticipates an increase in the transfer of patients with critical needs to the facility now that on-site landing capability is available," the release added. Mike Belbeck, MMC's president and chief administrative officer, said: "We have been incredibly fortunate to have worked with the professionals at LifeStar. They have been our consultants in this endeavor and earlier this month provided extensive training for more than 90 staff here at Methodist. "Usually we think of LifeStar as the vehicle by which we transport patients out -- and in the instances of Level 1 trauma that will still be the case.
