I'll try to keep things vague. Overall, thumbs up. What gameplay there is ranges from "eh, decent" to "completely awesome", the new controls are a godsend, the presentation is off the charts, and up until the ending, the story is great. What you've heard about the cutscenes is mostly true. While there are no single standalone scenes that take over 90 minutes, there are some groups of cutscenes that get pretty long. Combining the End of Act 3, Mission Briefing, and Beginning of Act 4, you get over an hour of non-stop non-interactive movietime. For the record, I liked the cutscenes - the writing is better than previous entries, the graphics are fucking insane, the music's good, and up until it all collapses at the end, the story was entertaining. So even when the cutscenes were absurdly long, I still enjoyed watching them. The end, though... No spoilers, but as a fan of the series, I thought the ending was pretty awful. Too many bad decisions to name here, but the biggest problems were the overexplaining and overreliance on a certain excuse to justify 99% of the story, a total lack of any consequences, and one of the best characters in the series getting treated as a footnote. I was really loving it up until the end of Act 5, where it just spirals downward into garba ... |
