Replies: 0 Last poster: Mugadza at 13-05-2008 12:48 Topic is Open President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa visited Zimbabwe yesterday to meet his counterpart Robert Mugabe and held undisclosed meeting while snubbing the winning MDC party. President Mbeki was in Zimbabwe following the political stalemate between Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe. The two presidents reportedly held closed door meetings at state for more than three hours before President Mbeki proceeded to the South African embassy. President Mbeki later met Mugabe before returning to South Africa without disclosing the agenda of the meeting to reporters. Following President Mbeki’s failure to mediate between Zanu PF and the winning MDC Tsvangirai formation, MDC has called for Mbeki to be relieved off his duties as mediator and appoint someone who can really solve the Zimbabwean impasse. Speaking in Johannesburg South Africa, Tsvangirai’s spokesperson George Sibotshiwe said no one from the MDC would be meeting Mbeki in Harare and he indicated their party had requested SADC and the AU to appoint a permanent envoy to deal with the crisis. ‘I think what the country needs now is an envoy whose job will be to go through this mediation thoroughly on a day to day basis. As you are aware, President Mbeki does this mediation on a part-time basis as he’s a Head of State,’ Sibotshiwe said.
