FROM JOEL SHERMAN In a column in today's Post, I wrote about how strange it is to see Don Mattingly in anything other than a Yankee uniform. There was something else that jumped out at me seeing Mattingly now as opposed to when he was a Yankee: That he looked managerial. You know how candidates for the highest office always want to come off looking presidential because it reassures voters that they are up to the task. For some reason, while Mattingly was in a Yankee uniform, I did not sense he projected that. Perhaps it was the familiarity. I think it was something more subtle. I think Mattingly had to get out of a Yankee uniform almost as a way to say "I am serious, I want to manage" and not simply look like he was in the line of succession only as a Yankee. By being a Dodger, his willingness to work anywhere is projected. Also, Mattingly shares with Torre that serene self-confidence that serves a leader so well.
