Kershaw County school officials are scrambling to replace more than 1,300 wireless laptop computers damaged in a fire Monday at Lugoff-Elgin High. The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department and State Law Enforcement Division officials are investigating the cause of the fire, which occurred in a storage room. Classes resume today for the school’s 1,500 students, though the affected wing will be closed for cleaning for at least a week. Total damage, including the computer losses, still was being calculated late Tuesday, district spokeswoman Mary Anne Byrd said. Figures won’t be available for at least a couple of days. The Hewlett-Packard laptops were assigned to the school’s 10th-, 11th- and 12-graders as part of an ongoing initiative to outfit all high schoolers with laptop computers. ...
