A girl from La Grange Park will host a garage sale this weekend with hopes to raise money for less fortunate children all over the world. Heather Roppo, 14, said she began raising money for World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization, three years ago. She thought this was a good cause and wanted to help children around the world who do not have the necessities in life. “I wanted to do something that would help,” she said. “Everyone around here has something.” Heather said every year she sponsors a child from a different country. She has sponsored someone in Sri Lanka, Uganda and one in Haiti. “I sponsored tiles for their roof and stuff for their home,” she said. “We write letters, send clothing and money; we have garage sales every year.” World Vision Organization has been around for more than 50 years and sponsors children in 100 countries around the world, according to spokeswoman Amber Johnson. The mission is “to help children reach their full potential,” Johnson said. The organization focuses on children but keeps the family and community in mind as well. Johnson said if the organization helps a young girl they also want to make sure the community is thriving and turns into a great place for her to raise her children.
