 The Colchester Little League 11- and 12-year-old all-stars dropped the first game of Section II state tournament action Tuesday, falling to Mansfield, 9-8. Colchester, the District 10 champion, continues round-robin play at 7:30 tonight in Newington against Cromwell, the District 9 winner. Colchester cranked out five runs in the second inning — four were unearned — to take an early lead. Nate Kozlowski’s fourth-inning home run put Colchester up 8-3, and it appeared Colchester would take a victory. But District 11 champion Mansfield rallied in the fifth, scoring five runs to tie the game. It added a run in the top of the sixth to go ahead for the first time. Colchester threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Kozlowski was called out at first base on a close play with two out — that ended Colchester’s rally. Matt Scheidel had a two-run home run for Colchester, and his leadoff single helped spark the second-inning rally. ... |
