In agreeing to cut his spending as much as county commissioners wanted, Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti said this week that he is trying to help ensure residents get needed tax relief. Lamberti had initially balked at cutting his spending as much as other agencies, but has agreed to do so rather than engage in a protracted and potentially bloody fight with commissioners. The $33 million in cuts will include transferring the monitoring of people on probation to county government where it likely will be privatized. Spending on county government must be cut $82 million overall in order to pay for the property tax relief that voters mandated in a January referendum. “Every homeowner, every business, every organization has had to tighten their belts due the current downturn in the economy,” Lamberti said in a statement. “The Broward Sheriff’s office is no exception. I did so without reducing any core public safety services to the people of Broward County by being fiscally responsible without losing sight of our primary function of keeping the people safe first and foremost.” He added: “It is my opinion that the people of Broward County have been well served without compromising public safety which has always been my primary goal.” ...
