Former Mayor Edward M. Lambert Jr. is firing back at allegations that financial practices conducted by the city under his watch are akin to a theft of city funds. In a letter to city councilors penned by Lambert Tuesday, the former mayor calls comments made by councilor Cathy Ann Viveiros in Tuesday’s Herald News “false and reckless.” “There was no such ‘theft.’ There were no financial improprieties, No city money is missing. In fact, the Lambert administration left the city in robust financial condition with a surplus of $11,000,466 in free cash,” Lambert wrote. In her comments, Viveiros called on Mayor Robert Correia to action “to recover lost revenues and, if appropriate, institute legal action to hold responsible parties accountable for their reckless use and endangerment of tax dollars.” Lambert, however, after a day of collecting and reviewing information related to the audit provided The Herald News with information contrasting claims made in the audit compiled by the office of state Auditor A. Joseph DeNucci. Among the claims countered by the former mayor, Lambert said, was that the city collected $871,208.97 in payments in lieu of taxes from the city’s Housing Authority. The audit claims the city had lost almost $800,000 of operating income due to the lack of such collections for fiscal 2004 to 2008.
