South Florida Congressman Ron Klein has rounded up all 47 Democratic newcomers in Congress to support his bid to make Iraq pay for some of its own needs. Ron Klein The freshmen Democrats signed a letter written by Klein to leaders of the House Appropriations Committee, who hold the purse strings in Congress. The letter urges the committee to require that Iraqi oil revenue be used to pay for reconstruction, training and fuel in Iraq. “It is time for the Iraqi government to step up and take ownership for the reconstruction of their country,’’ Klein said. ``American taxpayers are not willing to foot the bill any longer.’’ The letter says the money the United States is spending in Iraq ``could fund virtually every emergency domestic priority in this country, as well as fully fund the war against terrorism in Afghanistan.’’ Most Democratic freshmen got elected in part by promising to change U.S. policy in Iraq, mostly by getting out of there. They and other critics in Congress from both parties have been frustrated so far by failing to alter President Bush’s policies or establish a timetable for troop withdrawals.
