One is a veteran of the Berlin Airlift. Another is a local crop sprayer. The third is a self-described “wrench turner.” But all are First Staters who have had a significant impact in the world of aviation, and they, plus three others, soon will be enshrined in the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame. These men — retired U.S. Air Force Maj. William C. Voigt of Dover, Magnolia aviator Alfred F. Johnson Jr., and retired Air Force Reserve Senior Master Sgt. Michael D. Leister, also of Magnolia — will be inducted during ceremonies scheduled for Oct. 4. They will join Milford’s Lt. Willis L. Carter, Wilmington native Brig. Gen. Theodore P. Crichton and the late Lt. Col. Norman H. Runge of Bear, as the most recent members of the DAHF. They will join 49 other Delawareans named to the Hall of Fame since 2000. “The DAHF recognizes men and women who have given uniquely and generously of mind, heart, skill and energy in the building of aviation in the First State,” said Hall of Fame President Harry Van Den Heuvel. “It honors Delawareans who have served the United States valiantly with their gift of wings.” And selection to the hall doesn’t necessarily mean someone had to spend time in a cockpit, Van Den Heuvel added. “It honors achievement in aviation, in the air or on the ground, that has brought singular credit to the state,” he said. ‘Just another flying job’ Now a spry 87-year-old, Bill Voigt delights in talking about f ... |
