For the Arkansas Valley Lightning 14 and under girls softball team, a 98 degree Tuesday afternoon in the blazing hot summer sun may very well have felt a lot like a vacation, considering most of their afternoons are spent on the softball diamond in otherwise comparable weather, wearing layers of protective gear. However, though a vacation by comparison, the reasoning held great importance as the team’s clever idea to host a car wash fundraiser to help pay for their July trip to the USSSA National Softball Tournament in Kansas City, MO generated a large turnout to which event sponsor Susan Knabenshue said adequate funding looked to be in sight. “We couldn’t do it without the community’s support,” said Knabenshue, who estimated an approximate goal of $1,500-$2,000 to fund the trip. At the national level, the first time participants look to fair well though expectations are reasonable says Knabenshue who commented, “experience is what we’re hoping to gain. Experience at the national level is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Experience may be the key, however the chance at winning a national level game may very well be an achievable goal. According to the USSSA website, the Lightning rank fourth amongst all Colorado teams in the 14 & under C division and rank 29th from 480 registered USSSA softball teams across the United States in the site’s point system.
