A 14-member task force charged with coming up with ideas on improving the criminal justice system in Mecklenburg County will hold its first meeting today. The meeting, which is open to the public, is set for 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in room 267 of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. Fourth St. in uptown. Members are expected to get an overview of the local justice system, and learn more about the task force's expected work. Mecklenburg County commissioners agreed in May to form the crime task force, and appointed its members earlier this month. The group will be led by former Superior Court Judge Shirley Fulton, and Harry Nurkin, retired CEO of Carolinas HealthCare Systems. The group is expected to offer recommendations to county commissioners by September. According to a county news release, the task force is given the green light to recommend allocation of resources to make the most effective impact on crime and justice, taking into account new criminal justice budget provisions made by Mecklenburg County and Charlotte City Council, as well as legislative needs at the state level. The group will meet about six times. After today, the next meeting is set for 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 30, also at the Government Center.
