The Richardson Tennis Courts at Ipswich High School have been busy lately. For six weeks this spring, 22 Ipswich girls were entered in a competitive tennis tournament, sponsored by a non-profit effort called Ipswich Tennis Lessons along with the Ipswich Recreation Department. Once a week the players competed for an hour and a half, playing 24 games of doubles with alternating partners. The competitors included 9 th -grade varsity team players, as well as aspiring 8 th -and 7 th -graders. On June 15, they wrapped up their final games, and the winners were announced. The Champion was Jess Lecaj, wining 78 games, and the finalist was classmate Isabel Hand with 74. Abigail Davis and Erin Monahan also received awards for their results, and Megan Freiberger won the Tournament Director’s Award for the highest winning percentage over six weeks, including 18 wins out of 24 games on the last day of the tournament. The courts continue to be busy with youth tennis most mornings throughout the summer, delivered by Ipswich Tennis Lessons. The programs are designed for kids from about 12 years of age to 16, interested in developing their tennis skills, and are instructed by Ipswich High School graduates and varsity players Jess Cote, Hilary Lynch, Bridget Fay, Nathaniel Brown, Matt Burke, and Michael Krathwohl.
