People in Bellingham are always talking about how progressive and radical our city is. Well what I want to know is: if Bellingham is so liberal, where are all the political-dance-party-protests? Because I don't see them happening. But why Bank of America? There are plenty of reasons to dislike Bank of America. With over $1.1 trillion in assets, Bank of America could be a leader in helping solve the climate crisis. Instead, it has chosen to invest billions of dollars in new coal plant construction as well as in companies that practice destructive mountaintop removal coal mining in the Appalachian region, including Massey Energy, Arch Coal and Alpha Natural Resources. These companies are responsible for the loss of millions of acres of forests and mountains and the destruction of communities throughout Appalachia. The way I see it, climate change is much bigger than just a bourgeois liberal issue, because the people who are hit hardest by the effects of climate change are communities that live in extreme poverty, especially poor farmers and indigenous peoples. Bank of America is the largest commercial bank in the U.S. and the ninth largest corporation in the world.
