The Jockey Club has formed a committee to study equine health, including track safety and the rules of racing, five days after the death of the filly Eight Belles at the Kentucky Derby. Ogden Mills Phipps , chairman of The Jockey Club, said Thursday the committee would be asked to review every facet of equine health, ranging from breeding practices to medication, and to recommend actions to be taken by the horse industry to improve the health and safety of thoroughbreds. -- associated press In brief COLLEGES: West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins was taken to a hospital in Charlotte for precautionary reasons after tripping on an airport tarmac and hitting his head on the pavement. Athletics director Ed Pastilong said Huggins had a bump on his head, and never lost consciousness. They flew to Charlotte for a Mountaineer Athletic Club event. •  North Carolina reserve basketball forward Mike Copeland will have surgery June 4 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, his father said. A senior at Christ School in Arden, he was released from his basketball letter of intent with Stanford after coach Trent Johnson left for Louisiana State.
