Jim Fitzpatrick is the Labour MP for Poplar and Canning Town Summer’s here. How do I know? Wimbledon, cricket season, next season’s footy fixtures out; and anti-social behaviour issues have come flooding in, as the days are longer, and the toe-rags who make life miserable for so many people are more evident. Gordon Brown, I was going to write, “enjoys” his first anniversary, but that clearly wouldn’t be right. The PM is working all hours, trying to ensure UK interests are protected and promoted. However, given the world increases in energy and food prices, that’s not easy. UK plc is in better shape than most of our competitors because of the last 11 years. We’ll see how well we ride out the storm very soon. One thing’s certain: Gordon Brown will keep trying, despite the miserable poll ratings he and the Government have at present. My wife Sheila has talked me into doing two weeks’ Voluntary Services Overseas this summer, at an HIV/Aids centre in Bangladesh. She’s always wanted to do VSO, and the organisation has recruited 10 MPs this summer, which gives us the chance. Most people know of and admire VSO and the work it does. It’s a great opportunity to be able to give them two weeks of our time, and hopefully we can be of assistance. We’ll be back for a week, then have our two-week summer break. Recess is a good time to do visits, provide tours of the Houses of Parliament, and play catch-up with issues that need attention. You can ... |
