Madison -- Another familiar face is leaving the state Assembly, with Rep. Suzanne Jeskewitz (R-Menomonee Falls) saying today she won't seek re-election this fall.
Jeskewitz, 66, who was first elected in 1996, said in a statement the decision was a difficult one to make, because she has "loved her twelve years as a legislator." She pointed to work on such issues as updating systems that record financial transactions and anti-human trafficking; Jeskewitz has also been co-chair of the Legislature's Joint Committee on Audit.
"Serving the 24th district truly has been an honor and a privilege, and now, while I am still healthy and energetic, I need to turn the page to the next chapter of my life," she said. "It's been an incredible journey, and I thank everyone for this wonderful opportunity to be their voice in Madison."
Jeskewitz becomes the ninth legislator to announce plans not to run for re-election; she joins Republican Reps. Eugene Hahn of Cambria, Carol Owens of Oshkosh and Steve Wieckert of Appleton, as well as Democratic Reps. Dave Travis of Waunakee, Frank Boyle of Superior and Barbara Gronemus of Whitehall in leaving the Assembly. Republican Sen. Carol Roessler of Oshkosh is also not seeking re-election. Meanwhile, Rep. Sheldon Wasserman (D-Milwaukee) is giving up his Assembly seat to run for state Senate against Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills).
