I attended a talk about the future of Java SE. Point #1 (for me as an author) -- they expect to release Java SE 7 in the summer of 2009. The release will include several interesting features including Modules, Jar file improvements, strings in switch statements, closures (maybe), better support for scripting languages (such as Ruby, Python, etc.) and the catching of multiple exceptions. There's also a new approach to applets in which an applet can be dragged out of the browser window. Initially, the applet runs in the sandbox (even after the browser closes) but the user has the option of turning the applet into a full desktop app. Pretty cool! ...
