Filed under: Kentucky Basketball , SEC Basketball , UNLV Basketball , MWC Basketball At the beginning of the month, Derrick Jasper informed Kentucky that he would be transferring . We now know where: UNLV. Jasper wanted to be close to his California home and felt that Las Vegas was close enough. This isn't a big surprise since rumors had him looking at the Runnin' Rebels (along with Cal and UCLA). He averaged just 4 points a game last year ... in which he was nursing injuries all season long. Jasper, a rising junior, will sit out the 2008-2009 season before joining UNLV on the court. While not an elite point guard (actually, a point guard in a swingman's body), there is a nice huge hole at point guard for Kentucky. ASeaOfBlue blog may think toughness was a part of the problem: Derrick Jasper looks to me like the kind of player who has a bit of a sensitive side. There is nothing wrong with this, but being sensitive around Gillispie is just going to be hard. Gillispie wears more emotion on his sleeve than any of us would have imagined, but it seems clear that he leaves all that aside when it comes time to lace them up and play the game. His practices are famously brutal, to the point Jerry Tipton apparently thinks that they were a significant contributor to injury this year.
