The formula seemed simple enough -- Jack Black and Angelina Jolie phone in three hours of afternoon voiceover work, Dreamworks turns it into crazy, spastic 3-D animated thing that should've come out in 2002, Ad Execs debate how many of the film's seven Matrix parodies they want to include in the trailer -- essentially, just your regular ol' star-driven, plot-lackinbig-budget non-Pixar summer animated pic, nothing we aren't expecting every year between now and the invention of 4-D animation. Waaaaiiiittttt aaaaaaaa minnnnnuttttteeee: "Kung Fu Panda" is currently an 86% on Rottentomatoes ? I realize it's early in the critical process, but we're talking about the same "Kung Fu Panda" from this trailer ? Not some amazing foreign documentary about a secret panda-poaching techno-subculture? Perhaps, just because a movie sounds terrible and looks terrible and has "Kung Fu" in the title and plays the song "Kung Fu Fighting" in the trailer, it's not actually terrible? Or maybe 18 out of 21 critics are full of crap? There's only one way to find out -- not see the movie this weekend then ask one of my cousins if they liked it and if they did not believe them anyway. ... |
