Japan's whaling industry is the latest to come under fire. Japan has claimed that whales are responsible for the diminishing numbers of fish, likely because Japan has also recently been making noise to end the ban on whale hunting, and is looking for support internationally. At the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission this week, a coalition of conservation groups and scientists accused Japan from diverting responsibility for the declining stocks. Daniel Pauly, director of a renowned fisheries research center, rebuffed Japan's claim, saying "Blaming whales is an issue that is not only false - whales are no more responsible than the Martians - but which prevents the very small resources of West African countries from being devoted to understanding the real reasons why their fisheries are declining." According to Dr. Pauly’s decade long study, only about 1% of what marine mammals eat is in competition for human consumption. What Japan is not acknowledging are the fleets from East Asia and Europe which have been legally — and frequently illegally — fishing along the coast of west Africa, where developing countries depend on the quickly disappearing fisheries.
