When viewers flip to public access channel 22 on their Charter Communications system on Wednesday, the screen will be blank. And it’s going to stay that way. The city of Holland is cutting off the free public access television it’s provided for more than 10 years to Park Township, Holland Township, Fillmore Township, Laketown Township, Zeeland city and about 20 percent of Zeeland Township. “If they ever want this turned back on, it’s going to be big bucks. This is serious. When this is gone, it’s gone,” said Barb Pyle, executive director of MacMedia, the nonprofit that runs Holland’s public access services. “This is history. It’s sad history, but it’s history.” The city can’t afford to provide the service for free any more, officials said, and the townships and Zeeland don’t want to pay for it. They share the same channel lineup through Charter Communications and it’s an all-or-nothing deal, said Tim Ransberger, spokesman for Charter in Grand Rapids. The company is required to provide space for public access and hasn’t made plans for the channel, he said. MORE TO IT There’s more to community access television than government board meetings. “Community access television really isn’t about their government meetings.
