Join Donna Lubbers Monday on a tour of her 3 a-half acre farm, Cedar Creek Organics, to learn about Community Supported Agriculture [CSA], organic pest and weed control and a light supper of vegetables picked from the farm. Lubbers’ farm is part of Community Supported Agriculture and Freeport Farmers Market. “I love to garden. I’ve gardened most of my life,” Lubbers said. Larson said the concept of CSA is that customers pay a fee at the beginning of the growing season and in return customers are given a portion of produce. Lubbers said customers have two options of receiving produce weekly or every other week. “You’re becoming an actual partner in the farmer’s business. You’re a shareholder in the farmer’s business,” said Margaret Larson, director of the Stephenson County University of Illinois Extension. In addition to pest and weed control, visitors can expect to learn about production and the business of running a CSA farm, as well as topics such as companion planting and importance of soil nutrients. Lubbers’ farm is certified organic by the Organic Improvement Association. She also grows heirloom vegetables, known for their full flavors. Heirloom vegetables are not altered or hybridized but have a shorter shelf life than produce found at the supermarket. Lubbers said she couldn’t work the farm alone.
