Nearly 50 per cent of teachers are unsupportive of new plans to allow them to search pupils for drugs and alcohol. They told the Teacher Supprt Network (TSN) that they did not believe this would have an impact on children bringing these items into school. Additionally, the organisation's questionnaire found that 80 per cent of teachers are unaware about what their legal rights are to search pupils for weapons, the Times Educational Supplement reports. Chief executive of TSN Patrick Nash raised concerns about the government failing to consider the safety of teachers. 'Two-thirds of teachers tell us that they would not feel safe in conducting a search, and we remain unconvinced that expecting teachers to fulfil this role is the right course of action,' he stated. Recommendations for teachers to be able to conduct more extensive searches of pupils were made by government adviser Sir Alan Steer earlier this month. ... |
