Polls have repeatedly shown that more than six out of 10 Czechs oppose hosting the US facility…Despite adverse public opinion the Czech and US governments are close to reaching a deal on placing the base on Czech territory .
Actions like this will be essential if U.S. plans to destabilize Eastern Europe with a “missile defense shield” continue to move forward. As Greenpeace occupied Brdy, the Czech government announced that an agreement on the shield would be postponed, no doubt due to the public’s antipathy towards it. The government also narrowly survived a no-confidence vote over the issue (and other matters), raising fears across the Atlantic that moving too quickly with basing arrangements could jeopardize the whole scheme.
