In the wake of the departure of Maytag and Butler Manufacturing, many people worried about Galesburg’s future. Although Galesburg is listed as the third fastest shrinking larger city in the state, based on 2007 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, one city official says there are many factors to look at in determining a community’s health. Only North Chicago and East St. Louis are ahead of Galesburg in percentage of population loss. The estimate may not be as definitive as it first appears. Although Galesburg has seen 2,649 residents move away since 2000, a percentage loss of 7.85, putting the estimated population at 31,091, the city’s numbers have decreased for decades. Since hitting a high of more than 37,000 almost 40 years ago, each 10-year census has seen the city become smaller. City Manager Dane Bragg said it’s hard to say how accurate the newly released estimates are. “You’re basically looking at estimates based on 8-year-old data,” Bragg said. “What the real numbers are, I don’t know. I think, obviously, we anticipated some decline from the Maytag and Butler closures.” There’s no doubt the loss of Maytag, which employed 2,400 people almost until it closed and had a workforce of 1,600 when it left town in 2004, has had an impact. Butler offered more than 900 good-paying jobs until shortly before it shuttered its Galesburg operations.
