| One hundred and fifty residents were awakened at about 8:40 a.m. this morning to a loud rushing sound and smell of rotting eggs.
A contractor working on the heating system of Phi Kappa Sigma’s pool was shutting off the gas when the valve snapped and natural gas began rushing from a pipeline, which was about a one inch in diameter. The contractor was not authorized by Puget Sound Energy to be in contact with the valve, said Jessica Madison, spokeswomen for Puget Sound Energy.
The line is located between Sigma Nu and Phi Kappa Sigma.
Police and firefighters arrived and evacuated residents within ten to fifteen minutes said Seattle Fire Department battalion chief Mark Larson.
“Not every neighbor answered their doors and some firefighters were forced to make entry,” Larson said.
Other fraternity members were awakened by firefighters pounding on their door.
“I was confused and just went along it,” said Max Burt, vice-president of Sigma Nu fraternity. “I didn’t have time to grab any of my school stuff.”
Residents stood outside their house while firefighters and energy officials worked on the line. Many of them were in their pajamas and didn’t know if they would make it to class.
Alpha Chi Omega sorority invited fraternity members inside for water and breakfast.
The rotting egg smell of natural gas smell was due to a chemical called mercaptan. Odor is added to make gas leaks apparent.
