The holiday weekend doesn’t mean a four-day break for some government and law enforcement officials in Winnebago County who will assist flood victims throughout the weekend. Linda Vaughn, president of the Machesney Park Village Board, spoke at a media conference Thursday to encourage residents to continue with the cleanup process and schedule building inspection appointments with the Winnebago County Building Department. About 600 homes were affected by the flood in the Machesney Park area, Vaughn said, and several residents have been able to move back into their homes. Almost 80 homes have been inspected by the building department. Once the building inspector gives the OK, utility providers should be called to schedule a time to reactivate the service. Residents should take photos of the damage for insurance purposes and then, they can begin the removal process, she said. “It won’t be a Fourth of July weekend with parties and cookouts for many people,” Vaughn said. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will open a disaster center at the Michaelsen Office Furniture building, 8010 N. Second St., on Monday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The dumpsters in the neighborhoods should be emptied Thursday night and Saturday, said Bob Springer, deputy chief of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.
