It will be impossible to bring Edinburgh's nurseries up to the standard demanded by Government targets without extra funding, it has been claimed. Education leaders in the capital have admitted that they will not be able to bring the city into line with the Scottish Government's pledge to take hours of nursery education per child up from 475 hours a year to 570 hours a year by 2010. This information came to light when head of education on the council Marilyne MacLaren told Labour group leader Andrew Burns that this target was not likely to be met, according to the Scotsman. 'We should not be signing up to these commitments when we don't have the money to see them through. It is a perfectly laudable goal but every goal has a potentially big cost,' the paper reports Mr Burns as saying.
