Sen. Tom Duane , who represents the 29th SD and is the Senate's first openly gay and first HIV positive member, probably among the safer members of the Democratic minority conference. As far as I know, he's facing no opposition this fall. But that isn't stopping him from raising campaign cash.(This is politics, after all, and better safe than sorry). Among the top sponsors of the May 22 event (or, as the invite calls them "champions"), who agreed to give or raise between $5,000 and $9,500, are SEIU 1199 (so much for the idea that the union will only be helping Republicans this fall ) and lobbyist Emily Giske, who is a longtime friend of Council Speaker Christine Quinn (a former Duane staffer). Supporters in the "benefactors" category ($2,500 to $4,999) include: Lobbyist Tonio Burgos, the Oneida Indian Nation and the Real Estate Board of New York. "The Vagina Monologues" writer Eve Ensler agreed to be a "sponsor" ($1,000 to $2,499). Lobbyist Suri Kasirer and DC37's PAC are "hosts" ($500-$999). Duane was one of six senators who were key to Queens Sen. Malcolm Smith's landing of the Senate minority leader's post back in 2006 after David Paterson, who held the job at the time, agreed to be then-gubernatorial candidate Eliot Spitzer's running mate.
