  Voters throughout the district chose Ken Donnelly as their Democratic candidate heading into the November race for State Senate. Uncertainty over whether he would face Republican challenger Brion Cangiamila, of Billerica, didn’t stop Donnelly from railing against Cangiamila’s policies. Cangiamila, who was not on the primary ballot, said he received more than enough write-in votes in Burlington and Billerica alone and had his celebration at his campaign office in Burlington. “We’re not through,” Donnelly said. “The people in this district know what the issues are.” Donnelly defeated Jack Hurd in the primary, winning in every municipality, except Arlington, where Hurd has been a selectman since 1997. The unofficial tally from town clerks’ offices had Donnelly besting Hurd by about 3,200 votes for a total of close to 12,000 votes for Donnelly throughout the district. A retired Lexington Fire Department lieutenant and current state regulator, Donnelly said he was at his Arlington home with his wife Judy and his friend Brad Tenney, when a call came in from campaign headquarters that he had won. Donnelly said that if he wins a seat in the State Senate he would stop his work as a state regulator.
