The Wichita River Festival isn't just for locals. People from out of town, out of state and beyond also have been enjoying the party this week, as their dollars contribute to the vital $356 million economic impact that 3.5 million visitors a year have on the area. If the 27,500 people employed in the local leisure and hospitality industry do their jobs well, these visitors will leave with positive things to say about Wichita and consider coming back for more. Lacking the obvious tourist lures of mountains and beaches, Wichita and Kansas must handle travelers with care -- and be creative about selling themselves to potential tourists. Some welcome new efforts are visible locally, statewide and regionally. But more must be done, which will require more money and effort. Given the price of gas, the Greater Wichita Convention & Visitors Bureau was smart to include "stay-cations" among its ideas for this National Tourism Week. The bureau estimates that even if a family of four splurges on a three-day stay in a local hotel, it can save at least $200 on gas by taking a "stay-cation." Those within a tank of gas of south-central Kansas will be especially ripe for harvest as tourists this summer.
