Last year in February, you might recall that we got a special look at the Chevy Volt and got to hang out with some of the project's lead designers. Since then, it seems like the Volt, a completely electric car, has become the last great hope for GM , given the recent rise in gas prices and the obvious reaction from that: rapidly falling auto sales. Even then, when we were being carted around from GM executive to GM executive, each one used every possible opportunity to mention the Volt, all the while with a hopeful glimmer in their eyes, as if to say, "Please, please tell all of this to your readers, dear blogger!" Well, according to new reports, the Volt is still on track to be released next year , or early 2010 at the very latest, and all of GM is pushing as hard as they can to get the thing released, starting with fully-functional prototypes due out by the end of this year. Here's a bit: [GM's director of design Bob Boniface ] said the front edges of the production model are more rounded compared with the concept version, which GM disclosed in January 2007 but has since retooled to improve the aerodynamics. GM is designing the Volt to run for 40 miles on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged at a standard electric outlet.
