The Derby Recreation Commission held the annual Kid’s Fishing Derby this past Saturday, July 26. Over 50 kids participated and had a great time catching fish, both big and small. There was a good mixture of regular anglers and novices. From Spiderman fishing poles to serious tackle boxes, equipment varied, but everyone seemed to enjoy the beautiful summer morning. Aviator Church volunteers mingled amongst the kids, helping with bait and weighing the catches. After fishing time was over, the Derby Optimists served a hot dog lunch and the kids anxiously anticipated the tabulation of the fishing results. Prizes donated by Wal Mart included fishing supplies, coolers and lawn chairs. Awards went to the following: Ages 5-8 • Biggest Perch: Jaraye Brown; • Biggest Catfish: Michelle Sherrow; • Smallest Catfish: Bryson Maphet; First Person to Catch Four Fish: Jaraye Brown.
