From the moment the first group of cars roared out in front of the grandstand, all eyes were on #357. Local officials had promised an exciting start to the 146th Wayne County Fair with a Friday night of demolition derby fun...and Jim Warnott was just the man who could deliver on that promise. Warnott, who is sponsored by Wally’s Workshop, made a grand entrance behind the wheel of his jet black machine. The SRO crowd roared its approval as Warnott gunned the engine and waved to his fans. Warnott had stenciled “Sasquatch” in big, neon-green letters along both sides of the car. It was clear from the opening gun that “Sasquatch” was the car to beat in the opening heat. This mythical metal beast stomped the competition even as Jim stomped the accelerator. One by one, “Sasquatch” reduced the other cars to smoking piles of crushed steel. Before long, only three other entries remained mobile and qualified for the next round. It was a wild start to a crowd-pleasing night of demolition derby. Donna Branning, spokesperson for the event summed it up perfectly, saying: “The fans want six heats of total destruction!” And that’s exactly what they got. Friday night’s festivities included 50 competitors.
