President Bush’s remarks to the Knesset today set off angry rebuttals from Democrats on Capitol Hill, particularly Jewish members from South Florida.
The clash occurred just before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi leads a congressional visit to Israel this weekend and before Barack Obama’s campaign swing through South Florida next week, partly to reach out to Jewish voters.
Bush told the Israeli parliament: ``Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along,’’
He blasted Osama bin Laden and the president of Iran for posing threats to Israel, and in the next breath condemned those who once had hoped to appease Adolph Hitler. ``There are good and decent people who cannot fathom the darkness in these men and try to explain their words away,’’ Bush declared.
Wasserman Schultz
Several South Florida Democrats immediately pounced.
“To stand before the government of Israel and insinuate that Democrats are akin to those who tried to appease Hitler shows that the president is apparently ignorant of history,’’ said Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston.
She and four other Democrats – Ron Klein of Boca Raton, Tim Mahoney of Palm Beach Gardens, Alcee Hastings of Miramar and Kendrick Meek of Miami – then issued a joint statement saying they were deeply offended.
