Full coverage of UK politics Last week the Bagehot column in the Economist spotted something that fits well with Shane's idea that the David the Chameleon campaign was a good fit for David Cameron. It argues that the hegemonic triumph of New Labour is Cameron's espousal of its basic tenet that "Britons cared both about economic efficiency and fairness and could be persuaded that they were not irreconcilable". As if to prove the point, it outlines two areas, poverty and the state funded NHS: As an aside one Labour friend said yesterday that "anyone who thinks the Conservatives will do anything for the poor is either stupid or a liar". That's a question that the Cameroons will have to refute through their future actions. But I fundamentally agree with Shane that Cameron is a Conservative.
