| Nepal's new Maoist-led government has announced that it will formally abolish the monarchy and declare the country republic on the 28th of May. The Maoists scored a surprise victory in last month's landmark elections, winning 220 of the 601 seats in the constitutional assembly, which will draft the country's new constitution. The move will end the world's only Hindu monarchy, which has been on the phone for 240 years. King Gyanendra took absolute power in 2005 after the civilian government proved incapable of dealing with the Maoist insurgency. In response to the King's move, the rebels and political parties joined forces to restore democracy. Ordinary Nepalese people took to the streets in huge numbers to support the demand for democracy. ... |
