| Danica Patrick became the first woman to win an Indy Car race today in Japan. AP reports : Patrick finished 5.8594 seconds ahead of pole-sitter Helio Castroneves on the 1.5-mile Twin Ring Motegi oval after leader Scott Dixon pitted with five laps left and Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan came in a lap later. Patrick is competing in the only sport I know of (auto racing) where men and women compete together. There's no women's league. And Patrick has shown she can compete, first by being the first (and so far only) woman to lead the Indy 500 (in 2005) and now winning an Indy race.
I've driven on a race track (albeit, at speeds much slower than Ms. Patrick) so I know something of what it takes to drive a race car. The physical stamina needed is amazing. I can last 30 minutes before I'm worn out. I can't imagine driving 300 miles at that pace. In addition to stamina the concentration and mental focus needed is daunting. I'm impressed with anyone that races professionally (even NASCAR or as I call it, Rednecks Turning Left).
Ms. Patrick's driving ability has made it possible for her to drive professionally. Her gender doesn't matter. She has proven herself to be a great driver.
