By MIKE PLAISANCE mplaisance@repub.com SPRINGFIELD - Former Mayor Charles V. Ryan says it was the realities of today, though nothing in the way of a blatant physical threat, that prompted him to consider security measures for the mayoral office in City Hall. "It's like any public facility," he said earlier this week. "Every once in a while, somebody is there who may be disturbed or erratic. But for the most part, I never thought it was that serious a problem." Ryan was asked to discuss the situation after current Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said that he was reviewing security options for the mayor's headquarters on the second floor of City Hall. Sarno said the security discussion began during Ryan's administration. Ryan was mayor for two terms, from 2004 to 2007. Sarno defeated him in the November election, and took office on Jan. 7. Ryan also was mayor in 1962-67. Occasionally, Ryan said, a visitor who was bizarre or threatening would appear in his office. "But we'd shake our heads and go back to work," he recalled.
