Court papers describing wiretaps show the mob tried to infiltrate the project to build homes and a golf course atop former landfills in the New Jersey Meadowlands. Investigators say associates of New York crime families got payoffs for steering the delivery of clean fill to the project known as EnCap. The Record of Bergen County reports the alleged mob involvement is laid out in court documents related to the February arrest of 62 reputed mobsters. The court papers, based on recordings made in 2005 by a government informant, describe mob associate Gino Cracolici's efforts to control access to the Meadowlands project.
